When dangerous goods arrive at a freight forwarder's facility, their hazard classification determines which regulatory framework applies and what must appear on every package and document. Hazardous materials – commonly abbreviated as HazMat – are substances or articles whose physical or chemical properties (flammability, toxicity, corrosivity, radioactivity, or explosivity) pose a significant risk to people, the environment, or transport infrastructure. Classification follows the applicable modal regulation: ADR (road), RID (rail), the IMDG Code (sea), and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (air) each organise dangerous goods into nine hazard classes and multiple subclasses, ranging from explosives (Class 1) to miscellaneous dangerous substances (Class 9). A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) underpins classification; hazard labels showing the class number and warning pictogram are mandatory on packaging, the conveyance, and all transport documents. Shipper and forwarder share legal responsibility for correct classification, marking, and documentation – errors can result in shipment refusal, transport bans, and substantial fines.
