The governing frameworks are ADR (road transport) and IMDG (maritime), both defining nine hazard classes – including explosives, gases, flammable liquids, oxidizing agents, toxic and infectious substances, radioactive materials, and corrosive substances. Each class imposes distinct structural and operational requirements: defined safety distances, ventilation systems, containment sumps, fire resistance ratings, and monitoring obligations. Compatibility is equally critical: certain hazard classes may not be stored together because their interaction can trigger uncontrolled chemical reactions – oxidizers next to flammable liquids being a prime example. Warehouse operators must not only meet regulatory requirements for each inventory type but also maintain documented emergency response plans.
