# Hazardous goods processing in seaports

Terminals must maintain physically separated storage zones to keep incompatible substances – explosives, compressed gases, toxic materials, corrosives – apart; every member of staff involved must hold a recognised dangerous goods certification. The workload far exceeds that for general cargo: advance notifications to port authorities, hazmat permits, specialised handling equipment, and readily available spill-response kits are all mandatory requirements. Errors or missing documentation can lead to cargo rejection, significant fines, and, in the worst case, safety incidents that bring terminal operations to a standstill.
