Reliable explosion protection starts with a systematic picture of where risks actually exist. Hazardous area classification is the process by which operators of warehouses, chemical plants, or tank farms identify and document locations where explosive atmospheres – formed by flammable gases, vapours, or combustible dusts – may occur under normal or abnormal operating conditions. Each location is assigned to a zone: Zone 0, 1, or 2 for gases and vapours; Zone 20, 21, or 22 for dusts, graded by the frequency and duration of the explosive atmosphere. The zone assigned directly determines the required protection category for electrical equipment, ventilation systems, and structural elements. In the EU, the ATEX directives provide the regulatory framework; the IEC 60079 series sets equivalent international standards. Written zone documentation must be maintained and made available during regulatory inspections.
