Hazard class labels are standardized diamond-shaped markings that must be affixed to packages and overpacks of dangerous goods to identify the applicable UN hazard class at a glance. Each label combines a pictogram, a class number, and a prescribed color code: Class 3 (flammable liquids) in red, Class 8 (corrosives) in black and white, and so on. Exact dimensions, colors, and symbols are governed by the relevant modal regulations—ADR for road, RID for rail, the IMDG Code for sea, and IATA DGR for air. Shippers, freight forwarders, and carriers share responsibility for correct labeling before dispatch; missing or non-compliant labels can result in shipment rejection or regulatory penalties. In an emergency, the labels give first responders an immediate hazard overview before any shipping documents are consulted.
