Warehouses and carriers treat it as one indivisible load: a single scan books the entire unit into a warehouse management system and transmits it across EDI interfaces, eliminating line-by-line article entry. This makes the handling unit a prerequisite for automated goods receipt, picking, and shipment confirmation. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with load unit, but the distinction is worth keeping: a load unit refers to the physical carrier, whereas a handling unit emphasises the unique identifier and the logical traceability it enables.
