Gross weight is the total weight of a consignment including the goods themselves, all packaging materials, and handling aids such as pallets, dunnage, or strapping. It differs from net weight, which covers the goods alone without any packaging, and from tare weight, which refers only to the empty container or vehicle. Gross weight is a mandatory field on all principal transport documents—bill of lading, air waybill, CMR consignment note—and serves as the basis for freight rate calculation, customs declaration, and axle-load compliance in road transport. Inaccurate figures can trigger carrier surcharges, customs delays, or regulatory penalties.
