A truck is somewhere on the motorway, and the dispatcher sees its exact position on screen in real time—GPS tracking makes that instant visibility possible. The Global Positioning System determines the location of a vehicle, container, or parcel via satellite signals; a telematics unit or mobile device then relays that data continuously to a central platform over cellular or satellite networks. In freight operations, GPS tracking is used to monitor routes, log arrival and delivery times, and protect high-value or hazardous cargo shipments. Unlike passive RFID or barcode systems, GPS delivers ongoing location updates without requiring a manual scan. Increasingly, GPS data is combined with telematics information on temperature, door openings, or driver behaviour to enable comprehensive shipment monitoring.
