Goods segregation protects both cargo and people by keeping incompatible products physically or procedurally apart during storage, transport, and handling – preventing contamination, damage, and mix-ups. It applies wherever diverse products share warehouse space or the same conveyance: food alongside chemicals, pharmaceuticals near certain hazardous materials, temperature-sensitive goods in mixed loads. In dangerous goods law, segregation requirements are legally binding: the ADR and the IMDG Code specify precisely which hazard classes must not be loaded together. Beyond regulatory obligations, product category, customer requirements, and industry-specific standards further define what must be separated. The concept is distinct from customs segregation, which concerns the administrative separation of consignments for clearance purposes and has nothing to do with physical incompatibility.
