Goods receipt inspection is the structured verification of an incoming delivery carried out at the moment of arrival, before any items are put away or booked into the warehouse management system (WMS). Warehouse staff count units, check packaging for transport damage, and cross-reference the purchase order, packing list, and delivery note; batch numbers and expiry dates are verified for perishable or regulated goods. Items that pass are accepted into stock; those that fail are quarantined and the discrepancy documented immediately and reported to the supplier to preserve any right of recourse. Damage that goes unrecorded at receipt is extremely difficult to attribute to a carrier or supplier at a later stage. In cross-border trade, the goods receipt record also provides the formal link between the physical shipment and the customs declaration.
