The central advantage of a global guarantee is that businesses no longer need to lodge separate security for each shipment or customs procedure. A single surety instrument – issued by a bank or an approved guarantor – covers all current and future duty obligations to the customs authority up to an agreed ceiling. Regular importers, customs agents, and freight forwarders use it to cut both tied-up capital and administrative burden significantly. In EU customs law, it is known as a comprehensive guarantee and is required or incentivised for holders of certain authorisations, such as the Union transit procedure. The guarantee remains valid as long as the utilised amount stays within the approved limit and all dues are settled on time.
