A reefer container is an actively refrigerated 20- or 40-foot shipping container designed for the international transport of perishable and temperature-sensitive goods. Its built-in refrigeration unit maintains a precise internal temperature, typically adjustable from –30 °C (frozen) to +15 °C (chilled). Unlike insulated dry containers, reefers require a continuous power supply – provided by clip-on generators at sea or by terminal plugpoints in port and at inland depots. Common cargo includes fruit, seafood, meat, cut flowers, and pharmaceuticals. Freight rates run considerably higher than for standard dry boxes, but the reduction in spoilage and liability exposure makes reefer containers the benchmark for cold chain shipments worldwide.
