A gate slot is a pre-booked time window during which a truck or other road vehicle is authorised to enter or exit a terminal, port, or logistics facility. Terminal operators allocate slots through online booking systems; carriers and freight forwarders reserve them in advance to coordinate arrivals and avoid queuing at the gate. Vehicles arriving outside their slot risk being turned away or held in a waiting lane, generating additional cost and delay. Gate slots are now standard practice at major container terminals and large distribution centres, as they smooth traffic flows, stabilise throughput, and allow operators to plan crane cycles and gate staffing more efficiently. The term should not be confused with a berth window, which governs vessel arrival times at a quay.
