The gate in marks the point at which a container, vehicle, or consignment physically passes through the entrance gate of a terminal, warehouse, or distribution center and formally enters the facility's custody. Once recorded, the gate in triggers an inbound receipt entry in the terminal operating system (TOS) or warehouse management system (WMS), updates stock records, and generates a timestamp that anchors the facility's liability. At port terminals, no container can be assigned to a vessel load plan without a confirmed gate in. This distinguishes the gate in from earlier documentary steps such as the booking confirmation or pre-arrival notification.
