Gas hazard after fumigation is the risk of toxic exposure from residual fumigant concentrations – primarily phosphine and methyl bromide – that persist in cargo, containers, or storage areas following pest control treatment. Fumigation is widely used for agricultural commodities and wood packaging materials under ISPM 15, typically carried out at the country of origin. The danger is easily underestimated: phosphine is colourless and nearly odourless at low concentrations, yet potentially lethal, and gases can remain adsorbed in packaging or cargo for days after treatment. Personnel must carry out gas measurements before entering any fumigated container; if readings exceed applicable occupational exposure limits, respiratory protection is mandatory. The IMDG Code requires a fumigation warning notice on both the container and accompanying transport documents; the consignment may only be handled freely once a certified fumigation company has issued a written clearance.
