Full Container Load (FCL) is a sea freight arrangement in which a single shipper books an entire container exclusively for their own cargo. The shipper pays for the full container regardless of how much space is used, but gains lower per-unit freight rates on larger volumes, faster transit due to fewer handling steps, and direct control over stowage and cargo integrity. By contrast, LCL (Less-than-Container-Load) consolidates shipments from multiple shippers into one container—more economical for smaller volumes, but involving additional handling and consolidation lead times. FCL typically becomes cost-competitive with LCL from around 15 to 20 cubic metres upward, though the exact threshold depends on the trade lane and prevailing rates. Standard FCL equipment includes the 20-foot container (TEU) and the 40-foot container (FEU).
