A freight forwarder issues the order confirmation as soon as a shipping instruction has been received and reviewed, making it the first binding document in the order lifecycle. It records the key shipment particulars: cargo description and quantity, pickup and delivery addresses, agreed terms (rate, transit time, applicable Incoterm), mode of transport, and any special requirements such as dangerous goods classification or temperature control. For the shipper, it is proof of acceptance and the basis for claims in the event of deviations; for the forwarder, it serves as the operational dispatch reference and the foundation for subsequent invoicing. Unlike a waybill (CMR) or air waybill (AWB), the order confirmation does not yet establish a contract of carriage under transport law – it confirms the commercial agreement prior to execution.
