Freight documents enter the picture the moment goods are handed over for carriage, establishing the contractual and administrative basis for the entire transport chain. The key document depends on the mode: an air waybill (AWB) for air freight, a bill of lading for ocean shipments, a CMR consignment note for road transport, and a CIM consignment note for rail. Supporting documents – packing list, commercial invoice, certificate of origin – complete the set. Together they identify consignor and consignee, describe the goods and quantities, and record freight charges and agreed delivery terms. For freight forwarders and customs authorities, these documents serve simultaneously as handling instructions, clearance basis, and evidence of liability in the event of damage or delay. Without a complete document set, neither customs clearance nor carrier acceptance of the goods is possible.
