When a shipper arranges transport of a pallet to Italy, the immediate question is what freight costs will apply – and they consist of several distinct components. The base freight rate, calculated by weight, volume, or whichever yields the higher chargeable weight, accounts for the largest share. Added to this are origin and destination handling charges, plus surcharges for fuel, security, or special handling. Beyond distance and mode of transport, rates are shaped significantly by capacity availability on a given lane: during peak seasons, prices can rise sharply. Freight costs should not be confused with total logistics costs, which additionally cover warehousing, customs clearance, and cargo insurance.
