> Freight capacity utilization measures the share of a vehicle's, vessel's, or aircraft's carrying capacity actually filled with cargo, expressed as a percentage of the maximum available capacity.

Freight capacity utilization measures the share of a vehicle's, vessel's, or aircraft's carrying capacity actually filled with cargo, expressed as a percentage of the maximum available capacity. Depending on the transport mode, the metric is based on weight (tonnes), volume (cubic metres), or a combination of both; in air freight, chargeable weight determines which measure applies. Carriers and freight forwarders monitor this figure because unused capacity directly inflates unit costs and can render routes unprofitable. Empty backhauls remain a persistent challenge: reducing them through return loads or slot-sharing agreements has an immediate positive effect on margins. Freight capacity utilization should not be confused with booking rate, which reflects contracted space regardless of whether it is actually loaded.
