A freight calculation formula is the mathematical method carriers and forwarders use to determine transport charges, based on whichever is greater between actual weight and volumetric (dimensional) weight. Volumetric weight is derived from the shipment's outer dimensions divided by a mode-specific divisor. On top of the base freight, surcharges such as fuel levies (BAF or FSC), security fees, and dangerous goods premiums are added, together with any applicable minimum charges. The formula underpins quotations, invoicing, and freight audits across all transport modes. It should not be confused with the freight tariff: the formula defines the calculation logic, while the tariff supplies the actual rates.
