# Free Alongside Ship

Free Alongside Ship (FAS) is used when the buyer wants direct control over the loading operation at the port of shipment—common in bulk trades or heavy-lift project cargo. The seller delivers the goods, cleared for export, to the named port and places them alongside the vessel at the quay; that is the full extent of the seller's obligation. Risk passes to the buyer at that point, before any loading takes place, and the buyer then covers stevedoring, ocean freight, insurance, and all import costs. FAS is restricted to sea and inland waterway transport and works best for non-containerised cargo handled directly at the quayside. In container shipping, FOB and FCA have largely taken over, as their risk-transfer points better reflect how modern terminals actually operate.
