A force majeure certificate is a formal document issued by a recognised authority – most commonly a chamber of commerce – confirming that an unforeseeable event such as a natural disaster, armed conflict, pandemic or transport blockade has made contractual performance impossible or unreasonably burdensome. Exporters and importers present it to counter claims for penalties, damages or default interest under international sales contracts. It is distinct from a simple letter of notification: the certificate carries institutional authority and is widely accepted by trading partners and insurers as proof of non-culpability. In documentary credit transactions, parties should note that force majeure certificates do not automatically extend LC presentation deadlines under UCP rules.
