Feeder ports come into play wherever mainline container vessels do not call directly – because of draft restrictions, insufficient cargo volumes, or the simple economics of a direct port call. They consolidate cargo from smaller regional and local ports and channel it to major hub ports on deep-sea routes; in the reverse direction, they break down inbound import consignments and distribute containers to hinterland destinations. Smaller feeder vessels bridge the gap between the two service tiers. For shippers without direct access to a mainline service, feeder ports are the practical and economical entry point into global container shipping. Unlike deep-sea hubs, which are designed for maximum throughput on a limited number of mega-vessel calls, feeder ports are characterised by fast turnarounds and the flexibility to handle a larger number of smaller vessel arrivals.
