A haulier applies for an EU road freight licence – and may shortly afterwards find BAG inspectors at the premises or at a roadside checkpoint. The Federal Office for Goods Transport (BAG) is Germany's central federal authority for regulating and enforcing commercial road freight transport. It issues operating licences and permits, carries out checks on vehicle condition, drivers' hours, rest periods, and load securing, and can impose fines or revoke licences for non-compliance. BAG also authorises cross-border road haulage operations and enforces EU social legislation in the transport sector. It should not be confused with Switzerland's Federal Office of Transport (FOT/BAV), which covers all modes of transport.
