FAS (Free Alongside Ship) is an Incoterm restricted to sea and inland waterway transport, under which the seller places goods alongside the named vessel at the port of shipment and completes export clearance. Risk and cost transfer to the buyer at that moment. The buyer then arranges and pays for loading aboard, ocean freight, insurance, and import formalities at destination. FAS is most common for bulk commodities, breakbulk, and project cargo where the buyer controls stevedoring. The critical difference from FOB: the seller's responsibility ends at the quayside, before the goods are lifted onto the vessel.
