Ex Works (EXW) places the maximum burden on the buyer: the seller does nothing more than make the goods available at a named premises—factory, warehouse, or other agreed location—and the buyer takes it from there. Loading onto the collecting vehicle, export clearance in the seller's country, main carriage, insurance, and import duties at destination all fall to the buyer. This makes EXW the polar opposite of DDP on the Incoterms spectrum. The hidden complication in international trade is export formalities: a buyer without a legal entity in the seller's country typically cannot act as exporter of record and will need a local freight forwarder or customs agent to manage compliance. Buyers new to cross-border sourcing are usually better served by FCA or DAP, which leave export responsibility where it naturally belongs—with the seller.
