> An export duty is a customs levy charged by the exporting country on goods as they leave its customs territory.

An export duty is a customs levy charged by the exporting country on goods as they leave its customs territory. Export duties are far less common globally than import tariffs and are used primarily by resource-rich economies — typically on crude oil, ores, timber, or agricultural commodities — either to retain those goods domestically or to raise their price for foreign buyers. For exporters, the duty represents an additional cost that must be built into pricing and trade contracts. It should not be confused with the import duty levied by the destination country, nor with export licences, which control market access.
