Unlike import tariffs, which are levied by the receiving country, export duties are charged by the exporting state on goods leaving its customs territory. Governments use them to conserve domestic raw materials, raise revenue, or restrict the outflow of strategically sensitive commodities. Within the EU they are rare; resource-rich economies commonly apply them to crude oil, ores, and agricultural products. For exporters, they represent a direct cost that can erode price competitiveness in global markets. Export duties must be declared in the export customs entry and disclosed on the commercial invoice.
