Unlike domestic shipments, every export consignment requires a specific set of documents meeting both customs and commercial law requirements. Core documents are the commercial invoice (proof of sale and basis for customs valuation), the packing list (packaging and quantity verification), and the transport contract – a bill of lading, air waybill, or CMR consignment note depending on the mode of transport. The export customs declaration is mandatory, and where preferential duty rates are claimed, a certificate of origin or supplier's declaration must accompany the shipment. Certain goods require additional official certificates: phytosanitary certificates, dangerous goods documentation, or declarations of conformity. Complete and accurate export documentation is a prerequisite for customs release, payment under a letter of credit, and adequate insurance coverage of the shipment.
