A company sells goods to a foreign buyer and ships them across a border – this transaction constitutes an export. Export is the customs-regulated movement of goods out of a country's customs territory for sale, transfer of ownership, or use abroad. The exporter must lodge an export declaration with the competent customs authority; the freight forwarder arranges transport through designated exit points such as seaports, airports, or road border crossings. Depending on the commodity and destination country, export licences, prohibitions, or sanctions screening may apply – dual-use goods in particular require prior authorisation. Export should not be confused with transit, where goods merely pass through a customs territory without being sold or consumed there.
