An exclusion of coverage is a clause in an insurance policy or transport contract that explicitly removes specified risks, events, or circumstances from the insurer's liability. In cargo insurance, the most common exclusions are war and warlike operations, nuclear or radioactive contamination, wilful misconduct by the insured, and inherent vice or natural loss of the goods. Once an exclusion applies, the insurer bears no indemnification obligation, even if the broader peril is otherwise covered under the policy. Freight forwarders and shippers must review exclusion schedules carefully before a loss occurs; excluded risks can only be covered by negotiating specific extensions, which attract additional premium. Exclusions differ from deductibles: a deductible shares the financial burden, whereas an exclusion removes coverage entirely.
