# Excepted Quantity

Picture a shipment of laboratory samples for a chemical company – each vial barely larger than a nail polish bottle. This is precisely where the Excepted Quantity (EQ) provision applies. EQ defines the minimum thresholds of dangerous goods that, because of their small volume, are largely exempt from the packaging, labeling, and declaration requirements that would otherwise apply. The permitted limits vary by hazard class and substance and are established in ADR (road), IMDG (sea), and IATA DGR (air) regulations. EQ consignments typically require neither full hazard labels nor dangerous goods shipping papers, significantly reducing administrative effort. Every quantity limit and packaging condition must be met without exception – any breach immediately voids EQ status. EQ should not be confused with Limited Quantities (LQ), which carry different thresholds and requirements.
