The European Train Control System (ETCS) is a standardized train protection system that transmits movement authorities and speed commands directly to the driver's cab, enabling safe cross-border rail operations without reliance on trackside signals. It forms the core technical layer of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and is progressively replacing the roughly twenty different national signalling systems that have long fragmented European rail. ETCS operates at three application levels, ranging from point-based trackside transmission to continuous radio-based communication that can eliminate conventional signals altogether. On international freight corridors and high-speed lines, ETCS is the mandatory interoperability standard.
