The EU Movement Reference Number (MRN) uniquely identifies a customs declaration within European customs IT systems, enabling end-to-end tracking from submission to completion of the procedure. It is generated automatically once an electronic declaration is lodged – whether for import, export, or transit – and links all associated documents, including manifests and transport records, under a single identifier. Customs declarants and forwarders rely on the MRN daily to query clearance status, liaise with border authorities, and trace transit movements in the NCTS (New Computerised Transit System). It should not be confused with the Community Reference Number (CRN), which covers a broader scope of EU-wide document referencing.
