When intermodal equipment – containers, chassis, or trailers – changes hands between two parties, an Equipment Interchange Receipt (EIR) is issued to record the asset's condition, identification numbers, and completeness at the precise moment of transfer. For carriers and forwarders, the EIR is the primary evidentiary document when damage or shortage claims arise after use: any discrepancy not noted at handover is extremely difficult to dispute later. Without this receipt, terminal and depot operations would be legally unmanageable. EIR workflows are increasingly embedded in terminal operating systems and processed digitally, reducing paperwork and accelerating gate turnaround.
