# EORI Registration

Before a company can submit import, export, or transit declarations in the EU, it must obtain an EORI number from the competent national customs authority. EORI stands for Economic Operators Registration and Identification; the number acts as a unique identifier across all EU electronic customs systems. Registration is free of charge in most member states and can be completed online through a national customs portal, typically within a few working days. Shipments tendered without a valid EORI number will be rejected, causing delays and potential fines. Non-EU businesses that conduct customs activities within the EU must also register. Unlike a VAT number, the EORI number is specific to customs transactions and is not interchangeable with other fiscal identifiers.
