When a business attempts its first EU customs declaration, one requirement immediately stands out: a valid EORI number. EORI – Economic Operators' Registration and Identification – is the unique identifier that EU customs authorities assign to economic operators, including importers, exporters, freight forwarders, and customs representatives. It consists of a two-letter country code for the issuing member state followed by a nationally defined sequence, and it is recognised across all EU electronic customs systems. The number must be declared in export, import, and transit procedures, as well as in authorisations such as Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status. It is distinct from a VAT identification number: the two serve different regulatory purposes and must be obtained separately.
