ENS Screening is the automated risk assessment performed by EU customs authorities on Entry Summary Declaration (ENS) data before a shipment arrives at the EU border, targeting security threats, prohibited goods, and suspicious patterns. It forms a core element of the Import Control System ICS2 and is purely a safety and security measure – distinct from tariff assessment or trade document verification. Where no risk is flagged, the shipment receives a clearance signal; a positive hit places the cargo on hold pending physical inspection or documentary review, which may occur before or after arrival. For freight forwarders and terminal operators, a flagged result means the goods cannot be unloaded or onward-transported until customs issues an explicit release. ENS Screening should not be confused with the customs declaration for release into free circulation.
