Shipping lines and depot operators use empty container depots to manage stocks of unloaded containers that are not immediately redeployed. Typically located near seaports or in high-volume inland areas, these facilities handle inspection, repair, cleaning, and documentation of returned boxes. Each unit is classified by size, type (e.g. 20-foot or 40-foot, dry or reefer), and condition so it can be allocated quickly to the next booking. For importers and freight forwarders, the empty container depot is the contractual return point after devanning; late returns can trigger detention charges. Not to be confused with a container terminal, which is integrated into the active loading and discharge cycle at the port.
