Emission monitoring of cargo vessels is the regulatory process by which shipping companies measure, document, and report the greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions produced during ship operations. Carriers collect fuel consumption and CO₂ data for each voyage and submit reports to competent authorities – in the EU this is governed by the MRV Regulation (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification). Onboard measurement systems record fuel use and operational data continuously; from these, operators calculate specific emission indicators such as the CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator). Regulators use the reported data to enforce emission limits and advance the IMO's decarbonisation strategy. For freight forwarders and shippers, the figures are increasingly relevant as inputs to sustainability reporting and Scope 3 emissions accounting.
