A freight forwarder accepts a booking for goods destined for country X — and compliance screening reveals a trade embargo is in force: the shipment cannot proceed, regardless of its commercial value. A trade embargo is a government- or internationally imposed ban that restricts or entirely prohibits commerce with one or more countries. Embargos are enacted for political, security, or economic reasons, such as responses to military aggression, human rights violations, or the proliferation of strategic technology. Comprehensive embargos cover all trade; partial embargos target specific commodity groups or economic sectors. Violations carry severe criminal penalties and civil liability, and applicable embargo rules are updated continuously by customs authorities and trade ministries.
