Unlike a paper waybill, an electronic waybill exists solely as a digital record yet carries equivalent legal weight across most transport modes. It captures all shipment data—shipper, consignee, cargo description, weights, and hazmat details—and is exchanged between forwarders, drivers, customs authorities, and receivers via standardised interfaces. In road freight, the eCMR protocol (additional protocol to the CMR Convention) provides the legal basis; in air cargo, the counterpart is the electronic air waybill (eAWB). Compared to paper, the digital format eliminates manual re-entry at border crossings, shortens clearance times, and enables end-to-end shipment traceability. It should not be confused with the electronic administrative document (eAD), which is issued exclusively for excise goods under the EMCS regime.
