This sets it apart from a Warehouse Management System (WMS), which operates at the level of orders, inventory, and storage locations – the WMS decides what goes where, while the WCS instructs the machinery to make it happen. High-volume distribution and fulfilment centres, especially in parcel and pallet operations, depend on WCS to sustain throughput and eliminate bottlenecks that manual coordination cannot resolve at scale. In practice, WCS and WMS are often deployed alongside a Warehouse Execution System (WES), which bridges the two layers.
