> An electronic bill of lading (E-B/L) is the digital equivalent of the traditional paper bill of lading: it evidences the carrier's receipt of cargo, records the terms of carriage, and serves as a negotiable title document for the transfer of ownership.

An electronic bill of lading (E-B/L) is the digital equivalent of the traditional paper bill of lading: it evidences the carrier's receipt of cargo, records the terms of carriage, and serves as a negotiable title document for the transfer of ownership. Where a paper B/L must be physically printed, signed, and couriered to the consignee or bank, an E-B/L is issued, authenticated, transferred, and archived electronically – significantly reducing turnaround times and eliminating courier costs. Shippers, banks, and letter-of-credit parties benefit most in time-sensitive documentary credit transactions. Legal recognition remains inconsistent across jurisdictions; organisations such as DCSA and BIMCO are advancing interoperable standards, but carrier participation and legal effect vary by country and legal system. The E-B/L should not be confused with a copy or surrendered B/L, neither of which conveys title.
