An electronic Air Waybill (eAWB) is the fully digital equivalent of the traditional paper AWB: all shipment data is exchanged via standardised electronic messages between freight forwarder, airline, and customs authority, with no paper document required to accompany the cargo. IATA established the eAWB as the binding industry standard through its Multilateral e-AWB Agreement and has rolled it out progressively across the global air freight network. Paperless processing requires a valid data exchange agreement between all parties involved. Compared with the paper AWB, the eAWB reduces manual data entry errors, speeds up advance customs declarations, and cuts administrative overhead — especially for multi-leg shipments handled by several carriers and agents. It also enables continuous real-time tracking throughout the transport chain.
