Established standards include the electronic administrative document (eAD) for excise goods moving within the EU, and the eCMR consignment note for road freight under the eCMR Protocol to the CMR Convention. Border and customs authorities can retrieve the relevant data directly from connected systems, speeding up inspections and eliminating manual re-entry. For hazardous goods transport, electronic accompanying documents are already legally mandated in many countries or are being progressively introduced. Unlike purely commercial shipping documents, accompanying documents carry an official control function and must remain accessible for the full duration of transport.
