Those eight digits define the applicable duty rate, preferential treatment under trade agreements, and the rules of origin that must be met. For importers and exporters, correct CN classification is mandatory – a misclassification can trigger additional duty assessments, clearance delays, or penalties. Legal certainty is available through a Binding Tariff Information (BTI) ruling issued by the competent customs authority.
