The EFTA–China Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force in 2014, was the first FTA concluded between China and a group of Western European countries. It covers tariff reductions on industrial goods, rules of origin, dispute settlement, and provisions on services and investment. The agreement is asymmetrical in design: China retains stronger protection in sensitive sectors such as agriculture, while EFTA exports in chemicals, mechanical engineering, and electrical equipment benefit from comparatively broad tariff concessions. For freight forwarders and customs declarants, demonstrating preferential origin is the central practical challenge — goods must satisfy product-specific value-added requirements to qualify for reduced rates. The EFTA–China FTA is entirely separate from EU–China trade arrangements, in which the EFTA states have no part.
