Freight forwarders and customs declarants moving goods across East Africa operate within the EAC Customs Union – the common customs territory of the East African Community's member states. It establishes a unified external tariff on imports from third countries and enables duty-free trade among members, largely removing the need for multiple clearances at internal borders. Established in 2005, the union currently includes Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. For exporters outside the region, the common external tariff and EAC rules of origin determine the most cost-effective entry point and the applicable duties. The Customs Union is also a foundation of the planned East African Common Market, which envisages free movement of persons, services, and capital.
